I can't honestly remember the last time I finished a book and was so excited about a new author. Regulation 19 is not your average tale of things that go bump in the night or shady drifters with agendas. It is well written and thought out and reminiscent of the early works of Stephen King, when ideas were fresh and still frightening. Regulation 19 is an excellent example of a small town held in the grip of the unknown. I don't give spoilers in my reviews so I can't reveal many details of what happens other than to say this is like reading your favourite Twilight Zone episode in book form. You will find yourself cheering for the rebels and hoping, somehow, that all will come out unscathed from the unknown terror which has taken over their lives in ways they can't understand. When the pieces start to fall into place things are explained and revealed. While this book is part of a series, enough is wrapped up that doesn't leave the reader grasping for more and hating a cliff hanger. While I can't wait to read the next book, I don't feel as if I am left missing a chapter,All in all if you like horror where the human spirit triumphs and enjoy a good puzzle, this may be the book for you.

Regulation 19 Deadlock Trilogy Book 1 eBook PT Hylton Reviews
Stop reading reviews and go read this book. Seriously. Best book I've read in ages. This story is a good blend of quasi post-apocalyptic meets fantasy. With straight-forward writing, the author introduces a lot of story questions and then later in the same book...reveals the answers!! So many books these days are parts of series and instead of doing an honest job with a book, many authors just try to set up as much intrigue as possible so you buy book two. This book actually leaves you feeling satisfied with the story AND you want to read the next book. Speaking of which...the only thing that bugs me about this book is that I can't read the next book right now. I actually signed up for the author's newsletter (which I never do) so I won't miss the second book when it's released. Yes, it's that good.
Like a lot of readers, I am pretty skeptical when I see an independent author who has a bunch of 4-5 star reviews and not many lower ratings. Some people have a lot of friends. And moms.
I can't speak to Mr. Hylton's social standing (though, I imagine he's got a good circle of friends), but the book really is that good. This was one of the first books I borrowed in the heady first days of my Unlimited membership. The blurb sounded interesting, and it certainly couldn't be any worse than some of the stinkers I've downloaded in the past. Plus, it would be free, which is always a good price for venturing forth into an unknown author's work.
I read the book and was thoroughly enchanted. It was a great mix of genres - suspense, sci-to, fantasy, family drama, etc. Nothing felt entirely new, yet it seemed entirely fresh. The characters were wonderfully real, with both male and female characters having believable skills, psyches, and emotional responses. The fantastic blended into naturalistic reality so seamlessly, the unbelievable felt very real.
I kept the book in my saved list for as long as I could, but finally had to delete it to make room for something new. "No problem," I thought, "I'll remember it and any, I am sure there's a list of what I borrowed in my archive." Well, not quite and no. My mind couldn't let go of the story and that gut feeling of wonder I had as I read, but the details started to slip. Title, author, character names, and other details began to fade. I decided to buy the book, so I wouldn't forget again, but there was no list of my KU borrowed books. I spent solid hours searching everything I could remember, and even recruited my husband to help. Keywords like "brother," "prison," "lock," and the like lead to, well, stories about men in prison. I remembered the title had something about "rules" or "laws," but that only got me more prisoners stories.
Finally, I gave up and contacted customer support and got a list of titles. I bought the book at once, the book I remembered the feeling of without the details is finally back on my . Know what? I'm gonna read it again today!
I can't remember how this book ended up in my wish list, but it stayed there quite a while before I finally bought it, and now I wish I had done it sooner. If you are a fan of Wayward Pines, this should be right up your alley. It's hard to talk about the book without spoiling it, so I will say that one of the main characters, Frank, is temporarily released from jail to help authorities find his brother Jake, who disappeared a few years before and is wanted for some unspecified law breaking. But when Frank comes out of jail he realizes things in his little town in the mountains have changed a lot, and not for the better.
What I enjoyed about the book was that the situation in Rook Mountain is revealed slowly, hints to more mysteries are dropped regularly to maintain interest. I read the book in a weekend, and even when I wasn't reading it, I was itching to go back to it and see what was coming next.
I mentioned the character Frank but the story is about several characters, so various chapters are told from the point of view of different people. Moreover the timeline is divided in the Before and the After (before and after whatever happened that you will have to discover by reading the book). I understand some readers found this confusing, I personally didn't, chapters referring to the past are clearly marked as such, and the characters are very different and each holding a different piece of the puzzle, so it wasn't hard for me to know exactly where I was.
This was a very entertaining book, and I purchased and started reading the second book in the series immediately after finishing this one.
